According to President Donald Trump, the US must “own” Greenland in order to stop China and Russia from doing the same. You defend ownership, not leases, and countries must have ownership. In response to a query from the BBC, Trump told reporters on Friday, “And we’ll have to defend Greenland.”

“The easy way” or “the hard way” is how we’ll accomplish it,” he continued. The White House has stated that the administration is thinking about purchasing Denmark’s semi-autonomous area, but it would not rule out the possibility of annexing it by force.

The territory is not for sale, according to Denmark and Greenland. According to Denmark, military intervention would terminate the transatlantic defense alliance.

The opposition and the heads of Greenland’s parties called for the “US’s disregard for our country to end” in a joint statement on Friday night.”We would rather be Greenlanders than Americans or Danes,” they declared. “The future of Greenland must be decided by the Greenlandic people.”

Although Greenland is the least populous region, its position between the Arctic and North America makes it ideally situated for monitoring vessels in the area as well as early warning systems in the event of missile attacks.

Greenland is essential to US national security, according to the president of the United States, who has stated on numerous occasions that it is “covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place” without providing any supporting proof.

At its Pituffik outpost at the northwest tip of Greenland, which has been run by the US since World War Two, the US currently has more than 100 military personnel stationed there permanently.

The United States is able to send as many troops to Greenland as it desires under current arrangements with Denmark.

However, Trump said that a lease agreement was insufficient in an interview with reporters in Washington.”Nine-year or even 100-year agreements cannot be made by nations,” he stated, emphasizing the need for ownership.I adore the Chinese people. “I adore the Russian people,” Trump declared. “But I don’t want them as a neighbour in Greenland, not going to happen.”By the way, NATO needs to realize that,” the US president continued.

With declarations reiterating that “only Denmark and Greenland can decide on matters concerning their relations,” Denmark’s NATO partners, including Canada and key European nations, have rallied to its support this week.

They emphasized that they shared the US’s interest in Arctic security and that partners, including the US, must work “collectively” to accomplish this.

They additionally requested “upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders” .

Trump’s use of military force against Venezuela on Saturday to overthrow its president, Nicolás Maduro, reignited worries about the region’s future.

In 2019, during his first term as president, Trump attempted to purchase the island but was informed that it was not for sale.

Next week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with Denmark.

Greenland’s natural resources, such as iron, uranium, and rare earth minerals, have also drawn more attention recently. These resources are becoming more accessible as the ice melts owing to climate change. It may possibly contain substantial amounts of gas and oil, according to scientists.
